About the Artist

Georgia Griffin
"Whimsical surrealism is my adult brain's way of dancing in the fairy dust of childhood."
Georgia Griffin is a self-taught artist working primarily in acrylic, though originally in oil. She also enjoys exploring clay, resin and assemblage works, writing and photography. A long-time resident of the Coastal Bend region of Texas, Georgia's studio is now just a couple miles from the gulf.
Her most recent series, started in 2018, is called “Sovereigns of the Sea.” This series grew out of an amusing little sketch she did for her grandson, Alex, of a fish in a gown that he dubbed "Queen Elizafish." Amused by the whimsical image, she decided to paint the queen-fish in glorious color adorned with jewels both historical and fanciful. Queen Elizafish quickly became a catalyst, and soon Georgia was researching official portraits of other past royals, reimagining them through a chimerical lens. Gradually that lens brought into focus an array of colorful characters in a world where semi-anthropomorphic sea creatures are the sovereigns of days gone by; aquatic nobles surveying their dominions on dry land but never far from their seas. These subjects are rendered in what Georgia calls whimsical surrealism, a style that allows her to share a wink with the viewer. One of four women artists featured in the June 2022 issue of The Bend Magazine, her piece "Sunfish King, Louis the Fishteenth" made an eye catching cover! https://issuu.com/thebendmag/docs/tb22_june_issuu

While working on her Sovereigns series and other pieces, Georgia also paints commissions for collectors around the country. In fact, no sooner was the commissioned piece "Poppies in Moonlight" shipped to a collector in Washington state than another contacted her to commission a piece depicting their dogs on the porch of their new property in Virginia. This was quickly followed by a beautiful family grouping with 12 dogs and cats!
Common to all of Georgia's work are intense colors, and often a sense of humor and whimsy. Currently in the research stage is a another series, sure to be full of interesting characters. As the saying goes, watch this space!
