Barbie at 50 - Looking at the American Icon from a New Angle

Barbie, that All-American doll, turned 50 on March 9, 2009.  Normally I don't do artist's statements, but this is a series in progress about an icon and seems to warrant a few words of explanation.

I have mixed feelings about this synthetic lady, and the impact she has had on a half century of little girls, myself included.  I draw no conclusions with this work, but will explore this subject throughout the year.  Upcoming works will include more paintings, and some assemblage pieces of Barbies who have known the ravages of child's play.
